Dose and Timing of Brushing to Control Excessive Hypocotyl Elongation in Cucumber Transplants
Brushing is an effective method to control hypocotyl elongation in cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L. ‘Turbo’) grown in plug trays for transplanting. The amount of daily brushing and the number of days to brush for best performance was determined. Treatment with 10 strokes per day for the 4 days of maximal hypocotyl elongation was sufficient to reduce final hypocotyl length by 25%. More brushing did...
متن کاملBrushing pansy (Viola tricolor L.) transplants: a flexible, effective method for controlling plant size
Though brushing is an effective method for controlling excessive elongation in many species, its adoption by the commercial plug transplant industry will depend on the ease and flexibility of its application. Brushing was applied to pansy (Viola tricolor L.) seedlings growing at a density of 1500 plants m-2 by daily stroking with 20/20 gauge netting. In dose response experiments, final petiole ...
متن کاملHippocampal Neurons Are Damaged Augmented Electroshock Seizures by Caffeine-
Caffeine-augmented electroconvulsive therapy has been introduced into medical practice without experimental confirmation that such seizure modification does not result in neuronal injury. In this report rats pretreated with caffeine prior to a series of nine electrically induced convulsions showed neuronal injury confined to hippocampal sectors and striatum. Electrically induced convulsions wit...
متن کاملEstrogen Receptors are Present in Neocortical Transplants
Fetal neocortical tissue was grafted into neocortical lesion cavities made in newborn rats. After two weeks survival, in vitro binding of [3H]-estradiol to cytosolic preparations provided evidence of estrogen receptors within the transplants. The observed high levels correspond to previous work demonstrating elevated estrogen receptor levels during the first postnatal week in the rat cerebral c...
متن کاملDamaged BZip Files Are Difficult to Repair
bzip is a program written by Julian Seward that is often used under Unix to compress single files. It splits the file into blocks which are compressed individually using a combination of the Burrows-Wheeler-Transformation, the Move-To-Front algorithm, Huffman and Runlength encoding. The author himself stated that compressed blocks that are damaged, i.e., part of which are lost, are essentially ...
